The West Sussex rural town of Steyning is located in the Horsham district of the county. It is at the north end of the River Adur, some 4 miles from Shoreham-by-Sea. Along with the tiny villages of Bramber and Upper Beeding, Steyning forms a built-up area on a river crossing point. In the middle of the 18th century Steyning held its own race meetings, the first of which was included in John Cheny's Historical List when the meeting was held from Tuesday 22nd August 1732 to Wednesday 23rd August 1732. Three years later a meeting took place in 1735. The ‘County History of Sussex’ recorded that Steyning races in 1735 were of very small importance, but acknowledge that a further meeting was hosted in 1745.
